Four pieces of paper, one SHENGHE canopy

Magnolia artwork and the wooden crown of a SHENGHE umbrella, shown in a reference-based editorial image.

A SHENGHE canopy starts with four fitted pieces of paper. Joined over the frame, they form a rounded surface that carries the artwork above the bamboo ribs. The number of paper sections describes the canopy construction; it is separate from the rib count beneath it.

During a July 2026 visit to SHENGHE in Shigu, Xiangtan University students recorded this four-sheet construction alongside the workshop’s bamboo joinery. Their account describes a craft that combines precise assembly with discussion of materials and finishes.

The finish in our current catalogue

Our current catalogue specifies a tung-oil-free gloss finish, applied three times by hand. It protects the paper for rain use and gives the decorated surface a gentle sheen. This is the finish specified for the collection offered here.

Hunan Daily’s March 2026 workshop visit also described SHENGHE’s introduction of an odourless gloss finish as an alternative to conventional tung oil. The detail belongs to the brand’s own material development in Shigu.

After a rainy walk

Let the canopy dry thoroughly in shade with good airflow before putting it away. Gentle opening and careful storage help preserve the paper, finish and folding frame.
